Rethinking Traditional Intervention
A strength-based approach for the remediation of dyslexia.
Founder's Message
If there is one thing I have learned during my career, it is that dyslexic people can, and do succeed. It took only a handful of students to inspire my program but many, many students helped me develop it. Each student brings new questions, a new mind and a new set of challenges, but we always rise above. Always. Our students overcome their fear of failure as they learn that they can succeed; they can do it! When they come to Logical Letters they don’t just learn to read and write, they learn to understand both their strengths and their challenges.

It really all started more than 35 years ago, during my first teaching assignment, when a dozen Grade 6 students introduced me to what would quickly become my life’s passion. These kids struggled tremendously in school, yet their intelligence and creativity left me feeling humbled. I set out on a journey to understand dyslexia, and to help free these brilliant minds from the struggles associated with it. As I worked with more and more dyslexic students, several trends emerged. Many of these trends, combined with neuroscience, have allowed me to understand how the dyslexic mind learns to read. I have also, over the years, learned how dyslexic students struggle. I have witnessed the tears of profound pain and the frustrated looks of surrender all too many times. However, I have also watched students rise up from the bottom of the class to become valedictorian. Once we work together at unlocking the logic behind our language, these students have no bounds.

Sally Shaywitz, a neuroscientist and leading expert in the field of dyslexia, considers a dyslexic person to be an individual with a serious weakness in reading, but surrounded by a “sea of strengths”. Understanding and enjoying the unique brilliance of individuals with dyslexia has been pure pleasure. I truly enjoy my work because I get to witness the brilliance of our students while playing an important role in their academic and personal success. Our students’ success is not only a tribute to their remarkable hard work and perseverance, but also to the extraordinary intelligence and creativity inherent in them.
Logical Letters is a program based on EXPERIENCE and SCIENCE but it is also rooted in a true UNDERSTANDING of how intelligent and unique dyslexic people truly are. When students come to Logical Letters, they do learn to spell, decode, read and write. They also learn about dyslexia and the basic science behind it. Additionally, they learn about the true advantages inherent in being dyslexic and, more importantly, how to harness those advantages to overcome EVERY challenge and achieve EVERY goal. When our students leave here, they are not only proficient readers and writers, but they understand how being dyslexic will help them succeed; they are proud to be dyslexic. I’m so proud of my program and staff because I know that we make the difference. We look forward to meeting every new student who walks in that door; because we KNOW we can help them. I know that no matter how frustrated, ashamed, or scared that student might be, we will help them overcome and succeed. It brings me nothing but pure joy to have this influence on so many young people. I am truly thankful for every experience and every student. I sincerely look forward to meeting you and your child.
“It’s not that you can’t do something, you just have to do it differently.”

Who are our Students?
So many children sit happily at their desks reading, writing and learning. Yet so many other children who are just as bright sit for hours wondering why they cannot keep up. These are our students. These students learn differently and for them, reading and writing involve an enormous amount of energy. They require a more systematic and engaging approach. Our students have a variety of skills and challenges. They are often diagnosed with dyslexia, or may have been noticed as:
Students who get tired or frustrated easily when reading
Students who often misspell words
Creative, outside-the-box thinkers
Students who have difficulty putting their ideas on paper
Very bright students whose intelligence does not always show up in the classroom
Students who solve problems in unique ways

I still remember in grade 1 and 2 screaming at the top of my lungs that I would never learn how to read and write and if it was not for Logical Letters, I probably never would have. I am now graduating CEGEP under my own sails!

(on how Harry Potter changed her view of reading) Dyslexia is not a pigeonhole to say you can’t do anything. It is an opportunity and a possibility to learn differently. You have magical brains, they just process differently. Don’t feel like you should be held back by it.
