I have had the honour of getting to know Marcy Scott over the past year. Although, some might say that we have only just met however, in such a short time it was Marcy that has changed my daughter’s life. She has given my daughter the single most important gift, her dignity. Marcy has an infectious passion when it comes to teaching children to read but I believe her true talent is breathing the life back into my family.
When you set off on your path of raising your children you are for the most part given the innate skills to provide food, shelter, clothing, and lots of love... However, you are never given the skill set of how to raise a dyslexic child. When it comes to teachers, report cards, interviews, sifting through approaches, second guessing your choice of school, talking to administrators and all of the stressors that go along with your child's new found learning difference will bring on, Marcy Scott is your go to girl.
We began our journey at logical letters 14 months ago. I remember feeling desperate, depressed, demoralized and discouraged of what lay ahead. I got no clear guidelines of what my next move should be from the psychologist. I had researched feverishly about all the different approaches being offered out there that claimed would ease my child into learning how to read and overcome her challenges; all very promising and seemingly quite successful. My first attempt at trying one approach was the wrong investment and a colossal mistake. Sitting two hours in front of a computer, five times a week, for six consecutive weeks, with a coach did more damage than good and now I needed to regain my daughter’s trust back. I learned the hard way that there was no quick fix to play catch up. After my first meeting with Marcy I felt reassured that if nothing else my daughter will learn because, she will love to learn while in the presence of this kind and passionate woman.
Marcy's unique way with children lends to confidence boosting, trust and validation. She teaches the whole child not just the child's learning deficit. She took the time to explain to my daughter about who she is, why she learns differently, what dyslexia means and most importantly made her aware of the gift that she has. Marcy has developed a program that I believe works because she uses the child's strengths to teach. Marcy has had an incredible knack of connecting with my daughter. She can read her facial expressions, knows when she is done and I feel the warmth she has towards my daughter, as it shows in the excitement she exudes in her every accomplished moment. In this year my daughter has begun to read and has begun her thirst for reading. It was this year, for the first time that she asked to go to the library.....she borrowed eight chapter books
I truly believe that the 'Marcy Scott ' way works, perhaps not science based, but because she uses a method that pulls on the strings of the child's strengths to rewire and unlock the code so that learning to read can be "logical"
